Notice

[11/09] UPDATE: EPA announces a public listening session that is to be held on November 23, 2009 in a November 5, 2009 Federal Register Notice announcement. The date and location of the external peer review meeting will be provided in a separate announcement.

[9/09] EPA announced the release of the Toxicological Review of Chloroprene in a September 29, 2009 Federal Register Notice. This draft assessment is provided for public viewing and comment. Public comments received on the Toxicological Review within 60 days after the release of the FRN will be provided to the external peer reviewers for their consideration during the External Peer Review Panel Meeting. Any comments not received within the requested time period will be considered by EPA in their revisions. The deadline for comments is November 30, 2009.

EPA is conducting a peer review of the scientific basis supporting the human health hazard and dose-response assessment of chloroprene that will appear on the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database.
Background
The draft Toxicological Review of chloroprene provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to chloroprene. Chloroprene (C4H5Cl) is a volatile, flammable liquid used primarily in the manufacture of polychloroprene or neoprene rubber. The latter is used to make diverse products, such as tires, wire coatings, and tubing. Human health risk concerns for chloroprene are primarily related to exposures via effluent and emissions from facilities that use chloroprene to produce polychloroprene elastomers or transport the product, although these exposure concerns have not been well characterized.

This assessment contains the derivation of a chronic inhalation reference concentration (RfC) and chronic cancer inhalation unit risk.

History/Chronology

1999The IRIS reassessment of chloroprene was initiated in 1999. Currently there is no entry in the IRIS database for chloroprene.
