Sanitary Sewer Overflows
Fact Sheets and Outreach Materials

Resort documents: | By Name |     | By Date |
  • Brochure: Benefits of Protecting Your Community From Sanitary Sewer Overflows
Full color brochure describing SSOs and the impacts of overflows to communities
    Date Published: 06/01/2000
  • Brochure: Sanitary Sewer Overflows - What are they and how can we reduce them?
EPA publication designed to answer commonly asked questions about SSOs.
    Date Published: 06/01/1996
  • CMOM Program Self Assessment Checklist
Screening-level tool that can help utilities evaluate Capacity, Management, Operations, and Maintenance (CMOM) programs and identify general areas of strength and weakness. Completing this CMOM assessment will allow the utility to flag CMOM program areas that need improvement and establish priorities for additional, more detailed assessments. In addition, the checklist will allow the utility to compare annual performance (e.g., percent of employees meeting training standards).
    Date Published: 10/23/2003
  • Fact Sheet: (OECA/Region 4) Evaluating POTW Capacity, Management, Operation, and Maintenance Programs
EPA's Office of Compliance and Region 4 are developing tools to support an audit program that will evaluate compliance of all aspects of wastewater treatment plant and collection system capacity, management, operations, and maintenance (CMOM) programs.
    Date Published: 06/01/2001
  • Fact Sheet: Asset Management for Sewer Collection Systems
This fact sheet describes the asset management approach and shows how it can be used to help public sewer utilities accomplish multiple goals of protecting and extending the life of sewer system assets, meeting new financial reporting requirements, and abating sanitary sewer overflows or wastewater treatment plant peak flow violations.
    Date Published: 07/18/2002
  • Fact Sheet: Financing Capital Improvements For SSO Abatement
Financing Sanitary Sewer Overflows Abatement Programs is based on a survey of available financing, including bonds, loans, SRF program, low-interest loans, grants, etc. This fact sheet provides useful information for communities to help them determine which financial mechanisms are best for them. To view this factsheet visit http://www.epa.gov/npdes/sso/finance/index.htm
    Date Published: 03/01/2001

  • Fact Sheet: Why Control Sanitary Sewer Overflows?
Sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) are releases of untreated sewage into the environment. They have always been illegal under the Clean Water Act, but EPA's proposed SSO Control Rule will clarify the prohibition and provide a program for helping municipalities track and report activities undertaken to control SSOs. • Preparing Sewer Overflow Response Plans: A Guidebook For Local Governments
This guidebook was prepared by the American Public Works Association (APWA) under Cooperative Assistance Agreement #CX825881-01 from U.S. EPA. It was designed to help local system owners and operators plan for sanitary sewer overflow response. The guidance contains a glossary, a suggested reading list, an example of a sewer overflow report, and a disk with Chapter III of the guidebook for developing your own site-specific plan. • Summary of the August 14-15, 2002, Experts Workshop on Public Health Impacts of Sewer Overflows
In assessing the human health impact from sewer overflows in the US, initial research revealed that relatively little data were available that linked waterborne illness or other exposures to combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). In response to these challenges, EPA held a Public Health Impacts Experts Workshop on August 14 and 15, 2002. A group of nine external and EPA experts in public health, epidemiology, and wastewater treatment attended the workshop. Observers included representatives of stakeholder groups and EPA personnel. This workshop solicited individual opinions and provided a forum for information exchange related to this Report to Congress.
