EPA's Pesticide General Permit

The EPA’s Pesticide General Permit (PGP) is available for point source discharges to waters of the U.S. from pesticide applications in the geographic areas where the EPA is the NPDES permitting authority. The EPA’s PGP is effective from October 31, 2011 through October 31, 2016, and covers most discharges from the following pesticide use patterns: (1) mosquito and other flying insect pest control; (2) weed and algae control; (3) animal pest control; and (4) forest canopy pest control. Discharges not covered by the EPA’s general permit may need to be covered under an individual permit issued by the EPA. Discharges not occurring within the geographic areas where the EPA is the NPDES permitting authority (PDF) (4 pp, 163K) may need to be covered by a permit issued by a state environmental regulatory agency. PGP Interactive Decision-making Tool

EPA has developed an interactive tool to help potential permittees determine permitting requirements specific to their activities. This tool will help you answer the following questions:

  1. Do I need an NPDES permit for pesticide applications?
  2. Are my activities eligible for coverage under EPA’s general permit? If so:
  3. What is required of me under the PGP?
