Description:

Phosphorous and nitrogen are valuable nutrients found in wastewater. The flow of phosphorous from rocks to the natural waterway has increased in recent years, due in large part to agricultural production. In addition to being a nutrient, phosphorous is a contaminant in aquatic environments that leads to the formation of organic material and algae. Recovery of phosphorous from wastewater will ensure its renewable supply and protect the environment. The objective of this EPA program is to fabricate ultra-­‐ thin polymer filtration membranes having magnetic nanoparticles for the selective recovery of phosphorous and other nutrients. We will use a layer-­‐by-­‐layer electrostatic method to build ultra-­‐thin and selective nanocomposite membranes. This approach will result in higher water flux, lower membrane fouling, and lower energy consumption compared to traditional membranes used in the treatment of water.
