Surface Functionalization of Packaging Films to Promote Adhesion of Aqueous-Based Inks

EPA Contract Number: 68D60034
Title: Surface Functionalization of Packaging Films to Promote Adhesion of Aqueous-Based Inks
Investigators: Yializis, Angelo
Small Business: Sigma Labs Inc.
EPA Contact: Richards, April
Phase: I
Project Period: September 1, 1996 through March 1, 1997
Project Amount: $70,000
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase I (1996) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Nanotechnology , SBIR - Pollution Prevention , Pollution Prevention/Sustainable Development , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

Description:

In-line treatment for functionalization of polymer film surfaces is proposed. The proposed treatment is expected to functionalize the surface of packaging films, particularly polypropylene film, to readily accept and bond with aqueous-based printing inks. This will prevent the release of 36.5 million pounds of printing ink solvents to the atmosphere annually. Regulatory and community pressure to reduce the use of solvent-based inks as a pollution prevention measure is already a significant driving force and will only intensify in the future. Upon successful proof-of-concept in Phase I, Sigma Labs has the necessary full scale production equipment in place to immediately proceed to the Phase II effort wherein the successful surface functionalization process can be applied to a commercial packaging film of subsequent lamination and market testing by a major packaging film producer who is a current client of Sigma Labs.
