Dissolution Kinetics of Single and Multicomponent NAPL Pools in Saturated Three-dimensional Porous Media

EPA Grant Number: R823579
Title: Dissolution Kinetics of Single and Multicomponent NAPL Pools in Saturated Three-dimensional Porous Media
Investigators: Chrysikopoulos, Constantinos V.
Institution: University of California - Irvine
EPA Project Officer: Packard, Benjamin H
Project Period: September 1, 1995 through August 1, 1998
Project Amount: $315,368
RFA: Exploratory Research - Chemistry and Physics of Water (1995) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Water , Land and Waste Management , Safer Chemicals

Description:

The objective of this project is to study the dissolution of single and multicomponent nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) pools in homogeneous as well as stratified three-dimensional experimental aquifers.

A bench scale model aquifer will be constructed to carry out the dissolution experiments. In addition, semi-analytical and numerical models for contaminant transport resulting from the dissolution of multicomponent NAPL pools in three-dimensional saturated subsurface formations will be developed.

The results of this research will provide physical insights which will improve our understanding of single and multicomponent NAPL pool dissolution in saturated subsurface formations. The new semi-analytical and numerical models, developed in conjunction with the three-dimensional data from this study, will increase our predictive capabilities in terms of dissolution rates, locating associated contaminant plumes, and pinpointing NAPL pools via aqueous concentration measurements.
