Ultrafine Oil Aerosol Generation for Inhalation Studies

EPA Grant Number: R827354C008
Subproject: this is subproject number 008 , established and managed by the Center Director under grant R827354
(EPA does not fund or establish subprojects; EPA awards and manages the overall grant for this center).

RFA: Airborne Particulate Matter (PM) Centers (1999) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Air Quality and Air Toxics , Particulate Matter , Air

Objective:

The objective of this research project is to design and validate an ultrafine aerosol generator for hydrocarbon aerosols to use in inhalation studies usinglaboratory animals. The particle generator will be used to do a controlled exposure of rats to organic carbon aerosol, a surrogate for the organic component of internal combustion engine tailpipe emissions.

Approach:

This project will focus on the design and validation of an ultrafine aerosol generator. The generator will produce aerosol from used motor oil, and the aerosol will be characterization to assess the number and size distribution. Particle sampling data will be collected to determine whether the generator meets the criteria of having greater than 1 x 106 particles / cm3 with a count median diameter between 30-50 nm.

Expected Results:

We expect to develop an aerosol generator with the ability to work with complex mixtures such as used motor oil. With this generator, animal inhalation exposure studies can lead to new findings in cardiovascular health problems related to particulate matter.
