Description:

Reactive trace gases such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, oxidation products of isoprene, and a variety of aldehydes, ketones, and alcohols are intimately involved in reactions leading to tropospheric ozone generation. Precise and accurate in-situ measurements of these gases are crucial for understanding fundamental atmospheric chemical cycles. The researchers propose to develop accurate and reliable standards for an important subset of these compounds and to demonstrate the ability to accurately measure these compounds in synthetic air mixtures with known levels of interferents. Several different approaches to making the necessary standards will be used including Henry?s Law devices, permeation/diffusion tube devices, and preparation of high pressure gas cylinders. Formaldehyde is the most unique compound to be studied as the detection apparatus for it is specific to formaldehyde. All other compounds will be detected with a gas chromatographic technique. The researchers will demonstrate the procedures necessary for proper calibration, conditions necessary for quantitative transfer through analytical systems, and detection of the targeted species. The researchers also propose to establish a calibration and testing facility at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) as a resource for members of the atmospheric chemistry community involved (or soon to be involved) in the measurements of these compounds.
