High-Performance Environmental Models and Class Libraries of Parallel Algorithms

EPA Grant Number: R825293
Title: High-Performance Environmental Models and Class Libraries of Parallel Algorithms
Investigators: Sheng, Peter , Rajasekaran, Sanguthevar
Institution: University of Florida
EPA Project Officer: Aja, Hayley
Project Period: January 1, 1997 through December 31, 1999 (Extended to December 31, 2000)
Project Amount: $730,605
RFA: High Performance Computing (1996) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Human Health , Aquatic Ecosystems , Environmental Statistics

Description:

The objective of this project is to develop a high performance coupled hydrodynamics-water quality model, based on an existing hydrodynamics-water model developed by Sheng and to-be-developed reusable object-model-based class libraries for parallel numerical solvers and science processes related to cross-media modeling and uncertainty. The 3-D hydrodynamics-water quality model developed by Sheng will be modularized to allow parallelization with ease. Each module of the modularized model will be improved with parallel techniques and tested on a number of computing environments, including MasPar2, SGI Origin 2000, CRAY T-3D, and SUN-UltraSPARCS connected with PVM. These parallel algorithms will be compared, improved, and stored in a library which can be accessed via Internet by EPA scientists and grantees. The parallelized 3-D hydrodynamics-water quality model will be applied to Florida Bay, a complex ecosystem.
