Description:
The primary focus of the project will to train and assist communities seeking to redevelop contaminated real estate properties.
Objective:
The objectives of the proposed project are to:
• Deliver community-specific brownfields redevelopment training and technical assistance.
• Provide resource and information brokering.
• Engage in brownfields-related outreach and education, promoting the ideas and concepts of brownfields redevelopment.
Approach:
The project will consist of five main activities. These activities are education and training, technical assistance, community involvement assistance, program development and resource/ information brokering.
Recipients of training and technical assistance will be located using a variety of methods. These methods include:
• Directly contacting new, existing and potential EPA grant recipients.
• Making presentations about TAB at conferences and workshops or providing other brownfields educational materials for these events.
• Meeting with potential communities at conferences and workshops.
• Networking through various regulatory and economic development agencies.
• WRHSRC TAB program website-generated contacts.
• Referrals from EPA, state, and local environmental and redevelopment agencies.
Because our past efforts have identified several problems and opportunities that are common to smaller, resource-limited communities, several specific projects are also planned to develop information or training and technical assistance materials that are expected to be broadly applicable within the region and nationally. These specific projects seek to build capacity in the following areas:
Expected Results:
This project will result in further redevelopment of brownfields properties with social and economic improvements to the brownfields community and surrounding communities. These improvements should increase local tax bases, reduce development costs by making use of existing infrastructure, mitigate public health and safety concerns, restore idle or under-used properties to productive use, enhance community image, reduce the need to develop open space, and provide opportunities to move toward more sustainable communities.
