Development, Evaluation, and Application of a Fast Time Response Mass Spectrometric Method for Quantitative Monitoring of Oxidant Precursors

EPA Grant Number: R825256
Title: Development, Evaluation, and Application of a Fast Time Response Mass Spectrometric Method for Quantitative Monitoring of Oxidant Precursors
Investigators: Shepson, Paul
Institution: Purdue University
EPA Project Officer: Hahn, Intaek
Project Period: October 1, 1996 through September 30, 1999 (Extended to October 30, 2000)
Project Amount: $440,262
RFA: Air Quality (1996) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Air Quality and Air Toxics , Air

Description:

To adequately address the role of reactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as isoprene in tropospheric ozone production and loss processes, measurement techniques that permit reasonably rapid sampling and analysis for VOCs is needed. This project involves the development, fabrication, and field evaluation of a novel ion-trap MS/MS method for measurement of VOCs in air at trace levels. The method involves direct introduction of sample air into the ion trap, followed by target compound ionization and accumulation, and finally collisionally induced dissociation to produce product ions that are then detected. This method can enable measurement of several different VOCs on a time scale of one per minute or better. The developed method will be applied to studies of the importance of isoprene and its oxidation products to the production of ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) at an urban-impacted forest site in northern Michigan, in years 2 and 3 of the project.
